SAHM DIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS
Shadwell sire SAHM, a record-setting graded stakes winner by Mr. Prospector and out of a champion racemare, died this morning after a long illness. The sire of 2007 3-year-old stakes winner Irish Dreamer, 2006 multiple graded stakes winner Mustameet, and nine other stakes horses from just four crops to race, SAHM suffered from an illness invading his intestinal tract. The popular 13-year-old stallion will be greatly missed.

NERINX (02 c, o/o Charmie Carmie, by Lyphard), a winner at Gulfstream, Saratoga, Churchill Downs, and Turfway Park, brought his show on the road to Hawthorne and added another allowance win to his resume. He set most of the pace while under pressure from first one rival and then another, but doggedly came home first. His final margin of victory as the heavy favorite in the 6 1/2 furlong allowance was a half-length. The Equibase chart said he "showed courage" in the victory. Bred in Kentucky by Chris Wright and Stratford Place Stud, NERINX races in the colors of Kenneth L. and Sarah K. Ramsey. He is trained by Michael Maker.

COCKADOODLE (04 c, o/o Shuttlecock, by Cox's Ridge) broke his maiden going six furlongs at Hawthorne over a wet fast track. He broke well and settled in four wide for much of the race. The son of SAHM mounted his challenge coming into the stretch and drew clear comfortably to win by 2 3/4 lengths. He is the 64th winner for his sire, who has four crops to race. Bred in Illinois by Mr. and Mrs. Harvey L. Vanier, COCKADOODLE races as a homebred for Nancy A. Vanier. Brian Williamson handles conditioning duties.

Stakes horse River City Rebel (03 c, o/o Dancing Marrea, by Lord At War (ARG)) captured a $47,000 allowance at Aqueduct over the inner track. According to the Equibase chart, he "raced in hand along the inside early, found room inside in the stretch and drew away late." The 4-year-old won the six furlong contest by six resounding lengths in a blazing 1:09 2/5. James A. Hill bred RIVER CITY REBEL in Kentucky. The son of SAHM races for the partnership of Leonard M. Friedman, Wachtel Stable, and Brous Stable. He is trained by Michael E. Hushion. He was his sire's third winner in the last four days.

A winner just 10 days ago, ARGENTIA BAY (02 c, o/o Argonette, by Diesis (GB)) got yet another photo taken in the winner's circle. The 5-year-old stretched out to 1 1/2 miles at Beulah Park and settled in just behind the leaders until the stretch. He challenged for the lead, going by the two pacesetters to record a 1 1/2 length triumph in the sloppy conditions. A Maryland-bred who was sold as a short yearling at the 2003 Keeneland January sale, ARGENTIA BAY was bred by Dr. Raymond Murphy. He races for Gerald A. Erfle and is trained by Jordan Olesiak.

BELLAGAR (04 f, o/o Dorei, by Theatrical (IRE)), a winner at two over Turfway's all-weather track, entered a six furlong Turfway allowance as the longest shot on the board but came home first. She was never out of touch with the leaders and made her move three wide on the turn. The 3-year-old tackled the frontrunner in the stretch and dueled to the wire, winning by a neck. Bred in Kentucky by Cindy Clark and sold at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky February sale as a 2-year-old, BELLAGAR races for Alison Norton. She is trained by S. Joe Cain.

IRISH DREAMER (04 c, o/o Sister Elizabeth, by Irish River (FR)), winner of the Dixieland S. at Oaklawn Park last month, was back in action in the $50,000 Mountain Valley S. at the same track. The race favorite, he settled in behind the first flight of horses in the six furlong stakes. He had to go four wide out of the turn and rallied willingly, but didn't catch the winner on the day. The son of SAHM secured the runner-up spot for the third piece of blacktype on his resume. Bred by Pandora Farms LLC in Kentucky, IRISH DREAMER campaigns in the colors of Kalarikkal K. and Vilasini D. Jayaraman. The sophomore colt is trained by Chris Richard.

The third winner in the last six days for SAHM, ARGENTIA BAY (02 c, o/o Argonette, by Diesis (GB)) absolutely ran away with a one mile and 70 yard contest at Beulah Park. The 5-year-old raced midpack until the second turn, splitting horses and taking command at the top of the lane. He quickly drew clear before being geared down nearing the wire, still winning by 5 1/4 lengths as the favorite. Bred by Dr. Raymond Murphy in Maryland, ARGENTIA BAY campaigns in the colors of Gerald A. Erfle. He is trained by Jordan Olesiak.

MABADI (03 f, o/o Barakat (GB), by Bustino (GB)), a winner in Great Britain, celebrated both Valentine's Day and her arrival stateside with a lovely allowance win at Santa Anita. The 1 1/8 mile allowance, a $59,900 affair, was contested on the turf. The daughter of SAHM trailed the field early, but made a move four wide on the final turn. She drove to the finish, crossing the wire a length the best. The 4-year-old MABADI was bred in Kentucky by Shadwell Farm LLC. She races for Ronald L. Charles and Clear Valley Stables while being trained by Sanford Shulman.

Winning for the seventh time in her career, GLASNEVIN (01 f, o/o Renewable, by Affirmed) pulled away for a daylight victory at Oaklawn Park. The bay mare settled midpack for much of the 1 1/16 mile contest before rallying four wide coming out of the second turn. She kicked clear of her rivals and won by 2 3/4 lengths as the favorite. Bred in Kentucky by James M. Biller, GLASNEVIN races for Jan Haynes and is trained by Cole Norman.

Shadwell sire SAHM registered two winners for the day, one on each side of the Atlantic. The U.S. winner BIGGERBADDERBETTER (04 c, o/o Alshoowg, by Riverman) broke his maiden going 1 1/16 miles on the turf at Gulfstream Park. The newly-turned sophomore was steadied early in the 12-horse field and unhurried at the back of the park. He made a move while four wide around the final turn and commenced a stiff rally through the stretch to secure a half-length triumph. Bred in Kentucky by Kilcash Breeders, BIGGERBADDERBETTER races for Raymond H. Cottrell Sr. He is trained by Kenny McPeek.
Meanwhile, in Great Britain, MONFILS MONFILS (02 c, o/o Sorpresa, by Pleasant Tap) captured a novice hurdle at Huntingdon. He had previously won twice on the flat in France. The Racing Post summed up his trip in the two mile and 110 yard hurdle over soft going nicely, "An encouraging debut by the ex-French-trained horse, who was held up in mid-division and came through strongly to lead at the second-last despite taking that obstacle awkwardly. He should improve for the experience and this ground was probably testing enough for him." His margin of victory was 1 1/4 lengths. IRISH DREAMER (04 c, o/o Sister Elizabeth, by Irish River (FR)) ran away from the field to win the $50,000 Dixieland S. at Oaklawn Park. A previous stakes performer, the son of SAHM rated in the fourth spot for a good portion of the 5 1/2 furlong stakes. He bid three wide on the turn to take command and crossed the wire an easy 3 1/4 lengths clear. He got the distance in a very swift 1:04 2/5. In a horrific race where several horses fell over a downed comrade, SO SAHM (03 f, o/o Chill Out Baby, by Clever Trick) stayed clear of the trouble after pressing the pace from the inside in this six furlong event at Penn National. As the favorite, she drew clear of the remaining competitors and crossed the wire 4 1/4 lengths the best. A New York-bred for Mr. and Mrs. Jose Samaniego, SO SAHM races for Paulette French. She is trained by Murray Rojas.

With another Nad al Sheba handicap victory just a week after her last one, PRIDE OF BAGHDAD (02 f, o/o Hidle, by Unbridled) carries the unique distinction of being both her sire's last winner of 2006 and first winner of 2007. In the latest win, the now 5-year-old mare faced another full field of 13 rivals. She broke from the far outside and raced midpack while wide. The daughter of SAHM moved up steadily in the one mile handicap, hit the front move than a quarter-mile from home, and powered clear to a comfortable 1 1/2 length win. Bred in the U.S. by Samuel A. Houston, PRIDE OF BAGHDAD is a Mohammed Al Jamali colorbearer. She is trained by A. Manuel.
