APRIL 2, 2008:
ROYAL JABAR
remained undefeated in 2008 with his dazzling victory in the 1st race at Hipodromo de San Isidro going 1,200 meters over the dirt track.

The 3-year-old son of ALJABR showed good speed and he established a clear lead after the first 400 meters. He galloped along strongly and was never challenged nor asked to run. His rider sat chilly all the way to the wire as the gray colt proved to be the easiest of eight length winner.

February 1, 2008:
ROYAL JABAR,
the son of ALJABR, impressively broke his maiden by eleven lengths in the 6th race at San Isidro going 1,600 meters over the turf course!

The gray colt galloped along in hand just behind the two leaders for the first 1,000 meters. A hole opened for him along the rail at the top of the stretch and when he was asked to go, he unleashed a burst of speed and had the lead within a few strides. His rider asked him to open up with no more urging than sitting lower in the saddle and ROYAL JABAR found yet another gear. He opened up by an even larger margin was looking for competition as he cruised home unchalleged.

ROYAL JABAR is the third foal from the stakes-placed Fred Astaire mare, Royal Bloomer. Bred by Evergreen Farm, he races for Haras Loma Linda and he is trained by D. R. Cima.

January 10, 2007:

SIERRA CAT, under jockey Emile Ramsammey broke sharply from post eight and he assumed a relax, one length lead through the first half-mile. Asked for more around the turn, he scooted away and opened a two and one-half length. Challenged midstretch, he kept on finding and was still nearly two lengths best at the finish.

AL BASHA RALLIES FROM LAST TO FIRST IN MOHAWK H.!

NYRA
by Jenny Kellner

As more than two inches of rain was dousing Belmont Park Friday afternoon and evening, Angel Penna, Jr. was certain the New York Showcase turf races would be moved to the main track. But when he walked the course Saturday morning, the trainer was pleasantly surprised.

“It was not bad,” said Penna. “Not bad at all.”

And although the Penna-trained AL BASHA had only competed on firm ground, the “not bad” (officially: soft) going proved to be no obstacle for the 3-year-old son of ALJABR, who rallied from last to win the 29th running of the $150,000 Mohawk Handicap for New York-breds by a half-length over Spurred.

“I was betting my life that the race would have come off the turf yesterday,” said Penna, who trains AL BASHA for Bembridge Farms. “This is a very good horse.”

Outrun early as Red Zipper towed the field of nine through moderate fractions of 25.95, 51.81 and 1:17:43, AL BASHA made a four wide move on the turn and then took off through the stretch, hitting the wire in 1:53.73 for the mile and an eighth.

“I was trying to follow the 10-horse [Spurred] because it looked like he had a lot of horse,” said winning jockey Rafael Bejarano. “The pace was slow, but my horse was pretty comfortable. He really kicked on strongly and I think he will be even better next year. This might make up for his tough loss last time out.”

The victory was the fourth in nine races for AL BASHA, who in his previous start was a very close second to Dave in his first stakes, the Ashley T. Cole Handicap for state-breds. A nose and a neck away from five straight wins, he returned $15.60 for a $2 win bet and earned $90,000.

“He doesn’t get the respect he deserves,” said Penna, who said he was surprised at the 6-1 odds. “The longer he goes, the better he is. I think he will be much better at a mile and a quarter. I’ll probably give him a little break and bring him back in Florida.”

Gimme Credit was another length and three-quarters back in third and was followed under the wire by Red Zipper, Dave, Banrock, Bestowed, Pa Pa Da, and favored Juror. Pays to Dream was scratched.

AL KADIR was favored to take his record to six-for-six and he did not disappoint. Proving to be at or near the top of the handicap division, he was nearly seven lengths clear of the second place finisher, the top mare in the country Sza Sza Gabor (PER) and more than eighteen lengths back to the third place finisher.

A winner at Turfway Park on September 8 over the Polytrack, DRAWN was away keenly, but he responded when asked to rate and settle midpack for the first half. He closed through the stretch, split horses going up the hill and went on under a hands and heels ride to win by three and one-quarter lengths.

Richard Hills registered a 54-1 double with two fine front-running performances at Yarmouth, highlighted by AAJEL's victory in the £20,000 Halls Group 'Victory Vase' Handicap.

Both of his wins came in the colours of retained owner Hamdan Al Maktoum for trainer Marcus Tregoning, with AAJEL taking the feature race on the final day of the Eastern festival.

The jockey sent the grey son of ALJABR to the front soon after the off in the mile-and-six-furlong event and the 15-2 chance kept up the gallop for a brave half-length success from 2-1 favourite Irish Quest.

Hills said: "He is a big horse and he needs to be bowling along.

"I had to be positive on him as he does nothing quickly and just keeps galloping - he will stay forever."

The double was initiated as Tayarat (11-2), who failed to enjoy the rub of the green at Lingfield last month, avoided traffic problems out in front to cosily land the attheraces.com Free Video Nursery.

September 16, 2007:

DRAWN broke from the outside post in the field of seven and he was forced three wide into the first turn and down the backstretch. Circling the field around the final turn, five horses lined up and he was pushed out into the middle of the track for the stretch run. Even though he lost so much ground, he was right there. "He's been doing everything right at home and has a nice temperament," said winning trainer Barry Hills told the Racing Post. "He's certainly above average and it was a good time. We'll see how he is when we get him home but I would look to go seven furlongs next time. He could go down the Acomb/Champagne Stakes route or alternatively head for either the Mill Reef or the Middle Park."

May 31, 2007

MUTUAL FRIEND (04 c, o/o Dubai Visit, by Quiet American) impressed in breaking his maiden in a handicap over the all-weather track at Lingfield in Great Britain. Going 1 1/4 miles, the son of ALJABR was held up in midfield for much of the contest before getting through for a 1 1/2 length triumph. The Racing Post said, "MUTUAL FRIEND looked well worth a try over this trip on his handicap debut, and that thought was fully justified when the lightly-raced colt found a nice turn of foot to nip up the rail inside the distance, and get off the mark. He was going away at the line and obviously stays this trip well. He is open to further improvement." The U.S.-bred campaigns as a homebred for Gainsborough Farm LLC and is trained by E. A. L. Dunlop.

May 28, 2007

Making quick work of his conditions while coming off a maiden special weight victory last month, TOM ARCHDEACON (04 c, o/o The Song Is You, by Seattle Song) stepped right into -- and won -- at the stakes level. The $48,450 Awad S. was contested at one mile on the turf at Arlington Park and drew 11 entrants. None of it daunted the son of ALJABR. He raced closer to the back of the field than the front before getting through on the inside. TOM ARCHDEACON found his way all the way to the front at the top of the streth and quickly opened up a daylight lead. He held off a closer, holding sway to cross the wire three-quarters of a length the best. Bred in Ohio by George A. Smith, Dr. W. E. Johnston, and J. W. Berry, TOM ARCHDEACON races for George A. Smith and John Royer. The second of two stakes winners in just over two weeks for ALJABR, the Awad winner is trained by Austin Smith.

May 26, 2007

ECHOING RIDGE (03 c, o/o Echotelicus, by Pentelicus) went to the post as the favorite in a six furlong event at Mountaineer Park and didn't disappoint. He took his time getting settled over the sloppy track and traveled patiently, still waiting for room to get through at the quarter pole. The son of ALJABR surged through on the rail when a spot opened and he got up late to tally a neck victory. Bred in Kentucky by Dalex Investments LLC and Shadwell Farm, ECHOING RIDGE is owned by Robert D. Bone and Joey and Wendy Platts. A graduate of the 2004 Keeneland September yearling sale, he is trained by Wayne McDonnell.

Just two months ago, MUNADDAM (02 c, o/o Etizaaz, by Diesis (GB)) was in Dubai taking down handicap races and placing in the listed $175,000 Land Rover Al Quoz Sprint. Today he made a splash in the stakes ranks in England as well, winning the listed Betfredpoker Spring Trophy S. at Haydock. The Racing Post said, "MUNADDAM, who did so well in Dubai earlier in the year, was always going well close to the pace and, quickening up a furlong out, never looked in any danger. He had the run of the race, but he is an improved performer who is effective at six and seven furlongs and is going the right way. He could well win again." MUNADDAM won the seven furlong stakes by 1 1/4 lengths. Shadwell Farm LLC bred the son of ALJABR in Kentucky. The 5-year-old campaigns for Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum and is trained by Ed Dunlop.

April 22, 2007

TOM ARCHDEACON (04 c, o/o The Song Is You, by Seattle Song) defeated a field of 12 by 2 1/2 lengths for the win in a maiden special weight at Hawthorne. Going 1 1/16 miles on the turf, the gray or roan 3-year-old settled early just off the pace. He commenced his rally in the stretch, mowing down his rivals for the 2 1/2 length triumph. Bred in Ohio by George A. Smith, Dr. W. E. Johnston, and J. W. Berry, TOM ARCHDEACON races for George A. Smith and John Royer. The son of ALJABR is trained by Austin Smith.

IDARAH (03 c, o/o Fatina (GB), by Nashwan), a two-time winner on the flat, made his second start over hurdles and came home a winner. Going 2 1/16 miles at Hexham in Great Britain, the 4-year-old performed like a seasoned hurdler and came home a five length victor. The Racing Post said, "It was no surprise that flat winner IDARAH had the best finishing kick and he quickened away after the last to score in good style. According to his trainer, the gelding failed to act in the gluey ground at Ayr on his debut, and as he jumps well, he should be able to follow up this success." Bred in Kentucky by Shadwell Farm LLC, IDARAH races for Liam Mulryan. The gray or roan is trained by L. Lungo.

March 23, 2007

STORM MATE (02 c, o/o Kostroma (IRE), by Caerleon) captured another allowance at Santa Anita, this one at one mile on the turf. The 5-year-old son of Shadwell sire ALJABR broke from the far outside. March 18, 2007

This time she blew away a field of five going 1100 meters, or about 5 1/2 furlongs, by six resounding lengths. The 4-year-old daughter of ALJABR had gone to the post as the heavy favorite. FANTOMA was bred in Puerto Rico by Haras Don Jorge and races in the colors of P.M. Racing. The six-time winner is trained by Allison Escobar.

February 17, 2007

SPRING JABAR (03 f, o/o Spring Valley, by Affirmed) notched her second win of the new year, capturing a 1 1/16 mile turf contest at Sam Houston Race Park. The 2004 Keeneland September yearling sales graduate races for Stephen R. Baker and is trained by Milo Brent Davidson.

February 9, 2007

PHANTOM GRAY (03 c, o/o Makadir, by Woodman) overcame a bit of trouble to break his maiden at Golden Gate Fields. Going six furlongs on a sloppy track, the gray or roan son of ALJABR broke sharply and dueled for the lead throughout. He brushed with his fierce challenger in the lane and came in a bit, but finally prevailed. He outfinished the runner-up by 1 1/4 lengths at the wire. Bred in Florida by American Equistock Inc., PHANTOM GRAY races in the colors of Oak West Farm. He is trained by Ted H. West.

February 7, 2007

AAJEL (04 c, o/o Awtaan, by Arazi) broke his maiden at first asking and did it impressively, going 1 1/4 miles over the all weather at Lingfield in Great Britain. He tracked the leaders, closed about two furlongs from home, and willingly found a hole on the inside to prevail by three-quarters of a length. The Racing Post had the following to say, "AAJEL, a tall grey by ALJABR, has a Derby entry and made the perfect start to his career by winning convincingly, challenging on (a rival's) inside in the straight and leading inside the final furlong. He went right near the finish and took the second with him, but it made no difference. He looks sure to go on from here but might not be easy to place in the short term, for he is not the sort the handicapper is likely to take any chances with. He is likely to wait now for turf racing." Bred in Kentucky by Shadwell Farm LLC, AAJEL is a Hamdan Al Maktoum colorbearer who is trained by Marcus Tregoning.

January 27, 2007
